the people of luna red: Gabriel King

Gabe King, Assistant Front of House Manager

How did you get started in the restaurant industry?

I started out at a coffee shop and then was an event banquet manager for 6 years. It was really fun and enjoyable; taught me a lot about presentation, long into the night hours and how to make people's specials days memorable. How can I provide great service and have their big day be the best possible? By the time I was done there, I knew how to do that well.

What's your favorite cocktail on the menu?

To be honest I love a gin and soda with lime, no straw. For a mixed drink, I would pick our Special Herbs which features junipero gin, lillet blanc, dry vermouth, simple syrup, lime, basil, cilantro, and jalapeño. Very herbaceous and refreshing.

What's your favorite dish?

Our root vegetable burrata salad is delicious and the duck confit is so good; very tender and full of flavor.

What do you enjoy most about working at Luna Red?

I love my coworkers and how friendly and kind everyone is with each other. The location is also perfect. Being downtown in the hustle on a Friday night and seeing everyone out is so fun. You always see people you know.

Also the owners have been in the industry for a long time which allows us to be really good at what we do. They've given me a lot of opportunity to continue to grow.

What is your favorite wine?

The Alto Moncayo Garnacha is so beautiful; fruit forward with red stone fruit, round tannins. It makes you pucker just a little but is still smooth and velvety.

The Union Sacré L'inconnue, Pinot Gris is also beautiful. It's exclusively at Luna Red by the glass. Definitely recommend that one.

Favorites industry spots in town?

Sidecar is always a fun spot. We know everyone there so it feels like just friends hanging out. Region is also a nice spot for some wine tasting downtown.

Favorite Movie?

Call Me By Your Name is great. It's a coming of age gay love story. Also anything Austin Powers.
