Tyler Cotton, Luna Red General Manager, moved to SLO to join the Luna Red team in 2015. Get to know his story!

What's the most memorable occasion you've witnessed at Luna?

I have worked so many special events, private events and parties over the years that it would be impossible for me to pick just one. We've thrown themed parties for holidays, hosted family-style dinners hosted by local farmers and wine producers, participated in San Luis Obispo's PRIDE celebration and other community events, and served as a venue for the people of San Luis Obispo to gather and discuss social and political issues with city representatives and California's current Governor. These events require so much attention, organization, planning and effort in execution, but they are also fun to be a part of and they can provide a sense of connection and community involvement that I find both rewarding and fulfilling.

What do you enjoy most about being the manager?

I've been in restaurant management for well over a decade, and the reason that I am still motivated and passionate after all those years is that for the most part this doesn't feel like "work" to me. I am lucky enough to get to spend my days with a group of humble, hard-working and hilarious co-workers who are dedicated to their craft. During the course of a shift I sample exciting new dishes, and taste the odd glass of wine or maybe a new cocktail that our bar manager is dreaming up. On the restaurant floor I'm able to interact with guests and with any luck contribute positively to their dining experience, or when an issue arises I will intervene and try to find the best solution. No two days are the same, and I get to learn something new or experience something new every single day.

Favorite dish at Luna?

I love our Split-Pea Hummus (with Cucumbers), and our Albacore Ceviche (add Avocado, because California). Both dishes are light and fresh, but pack flavorful punch, and they're the kind of thing you can eat before a shift and still stay light on your feet and not bogged-down.

Do you have any personal passions for the food business?

I recently passed the Introductory Sommelier exam, and am currently studying and practicing my blind tasting in preparation for the Certified Sommelier exam. I'm from Southern California originally and living in San Luis Obispo has really helped spark my growing interest in wine, and also provided the perfect environment for learning about viticulture and vinification.

Be on the lookout for Our Local Table dinners returning to Mint + Craft in March!

Santa Barbara-based singer/songwriter Will Breman’s style is as eclectic as his background. His live performance has evolved over the years, and he currently uses a technique called “live looping” - a process where he records and plays back multiple instrument parts in real time, creating a “one man band” effect. Meticulous at arranging his songs, Will believes this setup is truest to what he wants to express to his audiences. Catch him live in the Luna Lounge on Saturday, February 16.

In 2018, Luna Red won Best Happy Hour in the county!

Vote for Luna Red again in the New Times Best of SLO Readers Poll. Watch for ballots in the February 21, February 28, and March 7 issues!
